Best Play This Year!

Had an awesome time with The Flying Bandit up at The Sudbury Theatre Centre. Great folks to work with, and we actually got a set. When Craig and I first started The Flying Bandit on the Fringe circuit, we had a folding chair and a nice suit. It was interesting to have to incorporate movement from one set piece to the next. STC helped us realize this play to pretty much it’s fullest potential.

We couldn’t have asked for a better response to the show. I mean, FB is basically a Canadian heritage moment, performed by an unknown actor, written by an unknown playwright! It just goes to show that audiences CAN be drawn in by more than the common shiny baubles.

Having said that, I can’t complain about the shiny review the play received from The Sudbury Star.  All the accolades Craig receives are 100% deserved. It’s hard work doing a full length one man show, not to mention the 26 plus parts he had to play!  It’s nice to see your hard work appreciated….

April already?

Time flies!

Just found out I’ve been accepted for the Introduction to Adjudication course offered by Theatre Ontario. Adjudication is something I’ve been dipping my toe into for about a year now – mostly monologue/duet competitions through the Thespians festivals. I’ve observed numerous ‘ill-advised’ choices by judges. I work primarily with students and it amazes me how often adults want to ‘show teens a lesson’ by their comments. It’s downright horrifying, actually.

This adjudication course couldn’t have come up at a better time. I’ll be doing practical (albeit mock) adjudications of the plays at the 2010 Theatre Ontario festival. We’ll be practicing both private and public adjudications, as well as deciding awards. My goal is to get more into adjudicating plays and festivals at the high school level. I want to be a critical but constructive judge specifically for youth performers. One step at a time….

What’s Up for 2010?

This year is jam packed with conferences, new plays, new ideas, places to go, people to see. So far….

  • I’ll be teaching workshops at the State Thespian Festivals for Missouri and Arkansas.
  • Exhibiting at Missouri, Texas Educational Theatre Association, Arkansas, and the Florida Junior State Thespian Conference
  • Seeing premiere’s of two new plays I’ll be publishing through Theatrefolk.
  • AND directing my play The Flying Bandit up at the Sudbury Theatre Centre
